These trees ‘ are succulents, native of South Africa and warmer climate. In the northern hemisphere it gets cold and the trees would not survive if left out door when temperatures drop. To keep your jade, play safe and take in doors when the temperature drops to 10 degrees centigrade.
Place the tree as on the windowsill, or as close to the the window as possible to ensure it gets some sun and plenty of light.
These trees should be repotted every two years using good bonsai soil mix for good drainage.
Water thoroughly and allow the soil to get slightly dry in between watering. If over watered, the tree will suffer from leaf drop, and if under watered, the leaves will start to wilt and begin to wrinkle as water stored in them is used up.
They are usually trained as formal and informal upright and can be trained in cascade style as the branches have a tendency to droop and and lean downwards.
The branches can be wired with care as the thicker ones are brittle and break easily. Wires should be removed with four to six weeks as the branches will set in the new position in this time.
Pruned cutting from branches can be used to propagate and grow more trees. The leave are in pairs, allow new growth to develop at least three to four sets of leaves and then prune back leaving one set of leaves. From this one set of leaves, there will be two new shoots, repeat the process to keep the canopy tight and for the tree to keep growing.
Feed with liquid fertiliser of biogold pellets which we stock. If using garden fertiliser, then used balanced feed 10:10:10, when this is not available and you get a higher strength one, dilute it to achieve 10:10:10.
